Understanding Butler County Jail Release
Butler County has two adult custody systems with very different records. The Butler County Adult Detention Facility, or BCDF, is the Sheriff’s local jail. El Dorado Correctional Facility is a Kansas Department of Corrections prison. A person who leaves BCDF may enter the community, go to another jail, enter state prison, or return to an outside authority. A person leaving EDCF may begin post-incarceration supervision, reach final discharge, or simply move to another state facility.
That distinction controls the search. The Sheriff’s release record answers when a BCDF booking ended and whether the event was bond, recognizance, time served, dismissal, probation, or transfer. KASPER carries the longer state-prison history. A court docket explains the legal order behind many county releases. BOP, ICE, and federal court records cover outside-authority cases. “Released” should always name the facility and custody that ended.
Butler County Release Types
A release label describes one event, not the whole case. For example, dismissal of one charge does not clear another hold. A transfer ends BCDF custody but does not mean the person is free. Read the release authority and destination together.
| Type | Meaning | Next record |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or recognizance | The person leaves jail while the case continues under conditions. | BCDF release record and court bond order |
| Time served or probation | A court-authorized local custody term ends or community supervision begins. | Sentencing entry and probation office |
| Dismissal | A charge or case action ended, subject to any other holds. | District or municipal court docket |
| KDOC transfer | County custody ends and state imprisonment begins. | KASPER movement and location record |
| USMS or ICE transfer | BCDF hands the person to an outside authority. | Federal court, USMS, BOP, or ICE source |
| State discharge | KDOC incarceration and any applicable supervision end. | KASPER and a KDOC discharge record |
Inside a Butler County Release Record
The Sheriff’s public web page links dated jail-population PDFs, not a historical release database. Durable confirmation therefore comes from the existing booking sheet and release record for the relevant episode. Ask for narrow administrative fields rather than asking staff to research why a name disappeared.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name, aliases, booking or sheriff number | Which person and booking episode the record concerns |
| Booking and release date/time | The start and recorded end of BCDF custody |
| Release authority or disposition | The order or reason used to end the booking |
| Destination or receiving agency | Whether the person entered the community or remained in custody elsewhere |
| Charges and bond at release | The booking context at the time custody ended |
| Booking photograph | The image tied to that booking, if publicly releasable |
The related court file can show the complaint, bond order, dismissal, sentencing entry, probation order, revocation, or expungement order. It is often the lasting explanation of a short jail stay, but it is not a minute-by-minute custody feed.
Request Butler County Release Records
Butler County’s Public Information hub links its open-records form and policy. The policy identifies the County Clerk as the freedom-of-information officer while departments designate their own custodians. Use the form to request an existing record from the office that holds it.
- Identify the person, aliases, approximate booking dates, and booking number if known.
- Ask for the booking sheet and release record, including release time, type, authority, and receiving agency where public.
- Request electronic copies and ask for the booking photograph only when it is relevant.
- If information is withheld, ask for the exact Kansas Open Records Act exemption and all segregable public portions.
- Compare the response with the court order and any receiving-agency record.
KORA requires agency action within three business days. That is not a promise that every record will be delivered within three days. If it is not readily available, the office may provide a written explanation and the earliest expected date. Fees depend on the work and copies required; the research does not establish a fixed Sheriff release-record fee.
Online display length is not record retention. A PDF can leave the website while the underlying booking and release record remains with the custodian.
Butler County Release Record Limits
The Kansas Open Records Act, K.S.A. 45-215 through 45-223, begins with a policy favoring access but contains exemptions. An agency may redact protected material while releasing the rest. Juvenile information, sealed material, expunged records, and some investigative information require special care. A requester should ask the custodian to identify the statute used for each denial or redaction.
Expungement under K.S.A. 21-6614 is a court process with eligibility rules and waiting periods that depend on the case. The clock does not always start when a person walks out of BCDF. A bond release may precede a sentence, and a prison release may be followed by supervision. Restricted public access after expungement is not proof that no record once existed.
Find Released Butler County Inmates
Start with identity and last custody, not with a broad name search. The official Butler County sources divide county jail, state prison, municipal, juvenile, federal, and immigration custody. Each has a different proof of departure.
- Check the newest Sheriff jail-population PDF only to see whether BCDF lists the person at that dated snapshot.
- If the person was sentenced to Kansas corrections, search KASPER by KDOC number or name and date of birth.
- Read the Butler County District Court case for the order behind bond, dismissal, sentence, probation, or transfer.
- Use VINELink for a matched person and agency when a live record is available, then verify any alert with the custodian.
- For outside authority, use BOP for a sentenced federal person, ICE ODLS for immigration detention, or the federal docket and USMS route for pretrial custody.
- Request the BCDF booking and release record when no online source proves the event.
A released person normally drops off the current roster. Absence can also mean transfer, a report correction, or a changed publication snapshot.
The Butler County 24-Hour Releases guide explains why no official same-day feed exists. A named-person search still ends with the agency record that states what happened.
KASPER Butler County Release Search
The Kansas Adult Supervised Population Electronic Repository, or KASPER, covers people sentenced to the Secretary of Corrections since 1980 who are incarcerated, on post-incarceration supervision, or discharged. It is not a BCDF booking archive. Records are updated each working day, and KDOC notes limits including certain community-corrections events during modernization.
| Search field | How it helps |
|---|---|
| KDOC number | Best direct match to one state corrections record |
| Name and alias | Finds candidates when the identifier is unknown |
| Date of birth or age | Separates people with similar names |
| KBI number | Matches a known state identifier |
| Race and gender | Narrows candidates but should not replace stronger identifiers |
| Conviction county | Filters cases attributed to Butler County, not current physical location |
A public record can include a photograph, conviction and case data, anticipated release date, facility movements, custody or supervision level, parole-office location, and discharge information. Read the status and movement together. “Butler” as conviction county does not mean the person is in BCDF or was released within Butler County.
The official KDOC locating guide explains these fields.
The search entry is the right statewide starting point, but the selected record and its update date supply the evidence.
No Butler County Release Feed
As of the research date, the Sheriff publishes dated “Jail Population Report” PDFs, not an official rolling release feed. The reviewed report schema identifies housed people and charge or bond information. It does not show release date, release reason, booking number, destination, photograph, or historical release status. Publication gaps also mean the reports cannot support a precise daily cadence.
A name that appears on one snapshot but not the next proves only a publication difference. Call BCDF to ask whether that booking remains physically housed and, if not, request the public release or transfer fields. Use the court docket to explain the legal event.
Butler County Post-Release Supervision
Parole, postrelease supervision, court probation, and community corrections are not interchangeable. KASPER can show a KDOC parole-office location and supervision status. Butler County Community Corrections covers a separate court-based route. The sentencing entry tells which program was ordered when KASPER does not.
KDOC assigns Butler County to the El Dorado Parole Office. Its public contacts page lists 226 W. Central Avenue, Suite 310, El Dorado, and 316-619-8726. The full Butler County Post-Release Supervision guide distinguishes the agencies and absconder searches.
Butler County Release Alerts
Kansas VINELink supports a person-and-agency search and prospective change notifications. The Butler County Sheriff pages reviewed do not promise that every BCDF booking is supplied, so confirm that a matched record names the responsible agency before registering. A missing result does not prove release. For a KDOC person, the separate Victim Services notification program has its own eligibility rules and does not cover someone who is only in county jail, probation, or community corrections without KDOC supervision.
Federal systems remain separate. The BOP Inmate Locator can show a past federal release date and no facility for a sentenced BOP record. “IN TRANSIT,” a future projected date, or “UNKNOWN” is not release. ICE ODLS uses an A-number route or name, birth date, and country of birth. A no-result response is inconclusive. A USMS pretrial defendant may require the District of Kansas docket and facility confirmation instead of BOP.
Match Butler County Custody Records
The source should match both the legal custodian and the question being asked. A roster answers present custody at a snapshot. A release record proves the end of that booking. A court or sentence system explains what followed.
| Last custody | Current-status check | Release proof |
|---|---|---|
| BCDF county jail | Newest Sheriff PDF | Sheriff release record and court order |
| EDCF or other KDOC prison | KASPER location | KASPER supervision/discharge movement or KDOC record |
| Federal sentenced custody | BOP Inmate Locator | BOP release entry and federal docket |
| USMS pretrial custody | Facility, USMS, and PACER | Custodian record or federal release order |
| ICE detention | ICE ODLS and ERO | ICE custody, release, or transfer record |
| Municipal holding | Arresting department | Department record and municipal or district court |
Butler County Release Facilities
Facility names alone can hide the most important distinction in a release search. Use the link that matches the last physical and legal custodian.
- Butler County Adult Detention Facility holds local and outside-agency detainees; departures may be community releases or transfers.
- El Dorado Correctional Facility is a KDOC prison; KASPER tracks movement, supervision, and discharge.
- EDCF Reception and Diagnostic Unit classifies men entering state custody; movement is often an internal transfer.
- Butler County Juvenile Detention and placements are confidential and require an authorized agency or court route.
- Butler County municipal holding covers brief police custody before release or county booking.
- Federal or immigration detainees at BCDF may move to USMS or ICE custody instead of entering the community.
Property After a Butler County Release
The official BCDF Inmate Handbook gives concrete details that a roster does not. It says personal clothing and property are returned on release unless held as evidence. Payroll or personal checks placed in property at booking are returned, while remaining inmate-account funds are returned by debit card.
An inmate may complete a Property Release Form naming someone to collect property. The named person must show photo identification and collect it within 30 days. People transferred to KDOC must arrange pickup of property that KDOC will not accept, and the handbook describes the same 30-day risk for unclaimed excess items. These rules help distinguish community release from transfer preparation.
Butler County Release Court Records
The Kansas District Court Public Access Portal can show the docket that outlives the jail snapshot. Some documents remain available only through the courthouse. Butler County District Court says public files may be reviewed by appointment and asks callers to provide a case number. A public-access computer is also available.
The clerk is at 201 W. Pine, Suite 101, El Dorado. Published hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with a Thursday staff closure from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. Criminal division numbers are 316-322-4375 and 316-322-4374. Recheck these details before visiting.
Butler County Detainers and Transfers
The Sheriff states that BCDF houses people for the U.S. Marshals Service and immigration authorities. That local fact changes the meaning of roster absence. A person can leave Stone Road in a transport vehicle and remain confined under a different sovereign.
Ask the Sheriff’s record for the receiving authority. For a federal sentence, compare it with BOP. For federal pretrial custody, use the docket and USMS route. For immigration detention, try ICE ODLS and contact the proper ERO office when the public locator does not resolve the person. Never label a transfer as freedom without the receiving record.
Two Butler County Custody Systems
BCDF opened in January 2003 and has 230 beds at 701 S. Stone Road east of El Dorado. The same county also contains EDCF, which creates a common local naming trap. The jail belongs to the Sheriff and serves local courts plus contract authorities. The prison belongs to KDOC and holds sentenced state residents.
The reception and diagnostic function at EDCF makes quick state location changes especially easy to misread. Intake, assessment, and assignment can move a person within KDOC without any community release. KASPER movement history, supervision level, and discharge status are the needed fields.
Verify Butler County Release Results
A sound conclusion is narrow and attributed. State that the Sheriff’s record reports the BCDF booking ended on a certain date by a stated type, or that KASPER lists the person on supervision or discharged as of its update. Then identify the court or receiving-agency record that supports the outcome.
Do not turn a missing web result into a larger claim. Publication timing, transfer, confidentiality, expungement, spelling, and agency scope can all remove a name from one screen. The official release record and the legal case remain the best final checks.
